The Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y) is a procedure that reduces the size of the stomach to a small pouch that can hold minimal amounts of food and bypass the majority of the stomach and a small segment of the small intestine. The pouch fills rapidly and empties slowly, which causes a feeling of fullness and helps reduce caloric intake, allowing the person to lose weight. The procedure is usually performed laparoscopically. To learn more, click the following link: Gastric Bypass.

The Gastric Sleeve is an alternative to gastric bypass. The results of the sleeve are similar to the bypass, but the post-op requirements are less demanding. In this procedure, a portion of the stomach is removed, leaving a smaller pouch, thus restricting intake and like the gastric bypass, control the secretion of some intestinal hormones which are very important in the health improvement of the patients. Gastric Banding is a procedure where an inflatable ring is placed around the upper portion of the stomach to limit the amount of food the patient can eat. Also known as Lap-Band® or Realize Band®, the gastric band is fully adjustable and the procedure is reversible. To learn more, click the following link: Gastric Banding.
